Coast Guard captured its first ever NEWMAC championship. WORCESTER, MASS.--(4/21/07)--The US Coast Guard Academy women's varsity eight (ranked #4 in the CRCA/NCAA Division III weekly regional poll) defeated #5 Smith College, Mt. Holyoke (#11), Wellesley (#13), WPI (#14) and Clark on Saturday at the NEWMAC Championships in Worcester, MA to win their first ever NEWMAC championship.
The Bears varsity eight finished almost five seconds ahead of Smith in a time of 7:141. Although not having their best start, the Bears edged out a seat advantage through the first 500m of the race. As the crews passed through the halfway, or 1000 meter mark, the Bears had pushed out to almost a one length lead. Having established an open water lead as they entered the final 500 meters of the race, the Bears maintained a solid cadence to finish strong and capture the title.
The women's varsity second varsity eight, in the tightest race of the day, locked up with Wellesley and Smith as they approached the halfway mark. Coming through the 1100 meter mark, the Bears put on a strong move and were able to gain a two seat advantage over Wellesley and almost a length over Smith. Over the closing 500 meters of the race, the Bears were not able to match the finishing speed of Wellesley and lost by two seats in time of 7:38.09; just a half of a second behind the winner.
And in the women's novice eight event, the Bears were never in the race after having difficulties at the starting line and came off well behind the field. Although they fought hard throughout, they finished fourth in time of 8:16.7, nearly 20 seconds behind third place Smith College.
Next weekend the Bears travel to Pittsfield, MA to race Williams, Bates, Ithaca and Marist on Saturday, April 28.
