Colleen Perry picked up her 54th career win which ties her for second on Coast Guard's all-time list.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/21/07)--Colleen Perry scattered four singles and Colleen Denny homered as Coast Guard beat Smith in the opener 2-1 before the Pioneers jumped out to a 5-1 lead and held off the Bears to win the nightcap 6-4 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader, the final conference games of the season for both teams.

Perry (6-11) walked four and struck out three to pick up her 54th career win which ties her with Jen Paulson (‘05) for second on the school’s all-time list.

Denny hit a solo homer off the scoreboard in left in the second and Annette Boston had an RBI single in the third as the Bears took a 2-0 lead in the opener.

Smith scored its run in the fourth as Erin Quinn had an RBI ground out with bases loaded, but Perry escaped with no further damage.

In game two, Smith scored three runs in the first on an RBI double by Nicole Banton who later scored on a passed ball and Kathryn Schoenen scored on an error.

Coast Guard scored in the bottom of the first as Leanna Minton led off with a triple and scored on an RBI single by Boston.

Smith (16-16, 9-7) had single runs in the second and third on an RBI double by Crystal Fryer in the second and a RBI ground out by Taryn Pestalozzi in the third for a 5-1 lead.

Denny had an RBI single in third, Erin Cullen had an RBI ground out in the fifth and Boston had an RBI on a fielder’s choice in the sixth as the Bears loaded the bases with no outs, but Emily Hiltzik then struck out the Bears 3-4-5 batters to preserve the 5-4 lead.

Smith added an insurance run in the seventh, an unearned run as Banton knocked in a run with a ground out.

Hiltzik, who was the losing pitcher in the opener, picked up the save in game two as she pitched the final two innings to preserve the win for Dezarai Fisher (5-8), who allowed 10 hits and four earned runs in the first five innings.

Katie Murray (4-7) took the loss for Coast Guard as she allowed seven hits and three earned runs while walking one and striking out four as she went the distance.

Minton had three hits in game two for the Bears (11-19, 5-11), who were eliminated from earning a berth in the NEWMAC tournament on Friday when Smith swept WPI.
