LOWELL, MASS.--(4/14/07)--The US Coast Guard Academy women's varsity eight (ranked #4 in the CRCA/NCAA Division III weekly national polls) defeated #5 Colby College, on Saturday racing with the fast conditions of the Merrimack River.
The Bears varsity eight finished six seconds ahead of Colby in a time of 6:31.51. The top eight moved quickly off of the line and had established the winning margin by the 1000 meter mark. Despite Colby's increased rating in the last 500 meters of the race, the Bears maintained a solid race cadence to finish strong.
The women's varsity second varsity eight, in a similar race to the first varsity's, jumped out early and dictated the pace of the race finishing 9 seconds ahead of Colby in a time of 6:52.8
And in the most excitng race of the day, the women's novice eight recorded its first win of the season beating Colby's third varsity eight, comprised almost entirely of novice rowers, by 4 seconds. At the 1000m mark, the Bears held a 2 seat advantage but the Colby eight put on a huge push that put them 4 seats ahead after 1500m. Moving into the last 500m the Bears responded well, stopping Colby's momentum, and created some momentum of their own that resulted in the margin of victory.
