(Darnell Isaacs Photography) NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/7/07)--Colleen Denny highlighted a four-run fifth inning with a three-run double, her second double and fourth RBI of the game as Coast Guard came from behind to beat MIT 7-4 in the opener and Katie Murray allowed just three hits and an unearned run in the nightcap as the Bears completed the sweep of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader with a 3-1 win.
In the opener, Kasey Rowe had an RBI double in the second and Helen O’Keefe added and RBI single in fourth giving MIT a 2-0 lead.
Coast Guard got on the board in the home half of the fourth as Denny’s RBI double scored Jeannie Crump, who led the inning off with a double.
Crump was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to tie the game before Denny’s three-run double to left.
MIT got two runs back in the sixth on back-to-back RBI singles by Melissa Tanner and Lily Keung to cut the lead to 5-4.
The Bears added two insurance runs on a two-run single by Annette Boston in the sixth to increase the lead to 7-4.
MIT loaded the bases in the seventh with two outs as Chelsea Ostander singled and O’Keefe and Rowe walked, but Crump made a spectacular catch, running into the fence, to rob Tanner of a game tying extra base hit and end the game.
Colleen Perry (3-9) allowed eight hits and four earned runs while walking seven and striking out eight to pickup the win.
Amanda Poteet (0-4) allowed nine hits, seven earned run while walking two and fanning six, but took the loss.
Leanna Minton, Boston and Denny each had two hits in the opener for the Bears while Amanda Jason had two hits for MIT.
In game two, Murray (4-3) allowed just three singles walked none and struck out five while also working around five Coast Guard errors to get the win. Murray also had a pair of hits at the plate for the Bears and she was the only multiple hitter for both teams in game two.
Coast Guard (8-13, 0-5) scored an unearned run in the third and then a pair in the fifth on an RBI single by Denny and an RBI double by Erin Cullen to take a 3-0 lead.
MIT (1-15, 0-8) scored an unearned run in the sixth with pitcher Leah Bogsted delivering an RBI single. Bogstead (1-6) went the distance on the mound and scattered six hits while walking two and striking out four in the losing effort. |
