NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/6/07)--Junior Jay Turner fired a six-hit shutout while walking one and striking out three as MIT beat Coast Guard 2-0 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Coast Guard’s Jacob Pitchford (2-2) was the tough luck loser as he also went the distance allowing just three hits, one earned run, while walking three and striking out seven. Turner improves to 2-0 on the season.
MIT broke the scoreless tie with an unearned run in the sixth as David Nole reached on a lead off error, one of the Bears five errors in the game, and scored on an RBI double by Kevin Wheeler.
The Engineers (6-4, 3-0) added a run in the eighth as Steven Nunez drew a two-out walk and scored on an RBI double by Chris D’Annuzio.
Coast Guard (7-10, 2-3) had a chance in the bottom of the eighth as they loaded the bases with one out, but Brian Lisko lined into a double play to end the inning.
Adam Reckley (2 for 4) had two of the Bears six hits on the day and was the only multiple hitter in the game.
Chuck Arena tied the school record with his 154th career hit. He tied Rob Trevino (2002).
