Baseball - Johnson & Wales beat Bears 14-9 Print E-mail
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I.--(4/3/07)--The Johnson & Wales University baseball team defeated Coast Guard, 14-9 in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field.

After Coast Guard got on the board in the top of the second, Johnson & Wales took the lead in the bottom of the second with a four run inning, including a two-run double by junior Mike Manley. The Wildcats, leading 4-2 in the bottom of the third, scored four unearned runs in the inning, including a two-run double by senior Alex Hurley to take an 8-2 advantage. The Wildcats scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth, sending 10 batters to the plate while recording seven hits to take the 14-4 lead. Coast Guard rallied in the top of the eighth as they tallied five runs, including a three-run home by senior Chuck Arena to cut the lead to 14-9. That would be as close as the Bears would get, however as JWU held on for the 14-9 win.

Junior Brad Jackson ent 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI while sophomore John Kuschman went 3-for-6 with a pair of RBI in the victory for the Wildcats. Arena went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI in the loss for Coast Guard. Sophomore Bobby Gilbert picked up the win in relief for Johnson & Wales, pitching three and one third scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
