NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/31/07)--Jen Richards hit a towering three-run homer with two outs in the top of the seventh to cap a five rally as WPI came back to beat Coast Guard 7-6 in game two and complete the sweep after beating the Bears 2-1 in the opener of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader.

Coast Guard had a 6-2 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning. Amanda Matori led off with a single, following a fly out, Kelly Johnson was hit by a pitch and and Nicole Maglione walked to load the bases. Briana Dougherty reached on a fielder’s choice which forced Matori at home for the second out, with the Bears still leading 6-2.

Kristin Gervais then delivered a two-run single before Richards three-run blast which proved to be the difference.

Coast Guard scored first in game two as Jeannie Crump (3 for 4) and Carin Sweeney each had RBI singles in the first for a 2-0 lead.

The Engineers tied the game at two in the third as Sara Migdal led off with a home run and WPI added an unearned run on a throwing error to tie the game.

The Bears came right back in the bottom of the third as Crump drilled a two-run homer after Annette Boston had singled.

Coast Guard added single runs in the fourth and sixth, both times on RBI singles by Mary Gilday for a 6-2 lead after six innings.

Katie Murray (3-2) took the loss for the Bears as she allowed seven hits, seven runs, six earned while walking one and striking out three. Murray was in control through six innings as she scattered four hits and allowed one earned run before the seventh inning.

Heather Hassett came on in relief in the fifth inning and allowed four hits and one run in two innings work to pickup the win. Meghan Kelly worked a perfect seventh inning to record her second save of the season.

Matori had two hits for WPI in game two while Leanna Minton, Boston and Gilday each had two hits for Coast Guard.

In the opener, Nicole Maglione’s homer to lead off the third inning broke a 1-1 tie and WPI held on for the 2-1 win behind the pitching of Kelly (4-1), who allowed just five hits, walked one and struck out nine to pickup the win.

WPI (8-6, 3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly by Gervais, the run was unearned.

Coast Guard (5-11, 0-4) tied the game in the second on an RBI single by Keely Balthrop.

Colleen Perry (1-8) went the distance in the opener for the Bears and allowed six hits, one earned run while walking four and striking out a season-high 10 batters.

Gervais had two hits in the opener for the Engineers.
