 Bobby Brown had six first place finishes as Coast Guard won its second straight NEWMAC Championship. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(2/28/07)--Junior All-America Bobby Brown won three individual and was part of three winning relays for a total of six New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) first place finishes and head coach John Westkott was named Coach of the Year for the second straight season as Coast Guard repeated as NEWMAC Champions beating second place MIT 990.5 to 856.
Coast Guard had 11 athletes earn All-conference honors with a first or second place finish as the Bears won the championship for the fifth time in nine years.
Brown won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:40.31 which is an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Division III Championships. He also won the 500 freestyle (4:37.42) and the 1,650 freestyle (15:56.64). He teamed with Ryan Caple, Jack Shadwick and Jim Okorn to win the 200 freestyle relay in a school record time of 1:23.64. Brown, Colby Schlaht, Jack Shadwick and Jim Okorn won the 400 freestyle relay in a NEWMAC championship meet and school record time of 3:05.21. Schlaht, Shadwick, Jack Walsh and Brown won the 800 freestyle relay in 6:54.90.
Doug Fallon won the 200 butterfly in 1:54.39 and the 400 IM (4:06.63) while Schlaht won the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.68 giving the Bears nine first place finishes.
Coast Guard had a total of six second place finishes. Fallon was second in the 200 IM (1:56.84). Also placing second and earning All-conference honors for the Bears were Caple in the 100 breaststroke (58.39), Schlaht in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.08), Dan Cloonan in the 3-meter diving (425.70 points), the 400 medley relay team of Christian Berry, Caple, Shadwick and Brown (3:28.77) and the 200 medley relay team of Tim Berry, Caple, Okorn and Dale Cressman, who set a school record with a time of 1:34.20.
Coast Guard also won the NEWMAC Championship in 1999, 2001, 2004 and 2006.
