WORCESTER, MASS.--(2/10/07)--Junior Natalie Moyer, the NEWMAC's leading scorer, injured her ankle three minutes into the game and did not return and classmate DeCarol Davis played just five minutes in the second half before leaving with a shoulder injury as the Bears lost to Clark 73-55 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Moyer, who took just one shot and did not score, along with Davis are both expected to be ready for the Bears next game at home against Wheaton on Wednesday night.
Sophomore Sarah Roderigue had 16 points to lead Clark University to its seventh straight win. The Cougars improve to 12-10 and 8-3 in league play. Coast Guard (12-11, 5-6 NEWMAC) drops its second straight game.
Senior Ashley Auclair tallied 14 points and junior Katelyn Petty notched a season-high 13 points and seven boards for Clark.
Freshman Melissa Martinelli led Coast Guard with 17 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Clark used a 12-2 run to build a commanding 38-26 halftime advantage. After Coast Guard made it a one-point game (21-22) on a basket by Laura Hutchinson, the Cougars scored the next eight points –four from Jillian Camilleri, to push the lead to 30-21. Auclair’s jumper capped a 6-2 spurt for Clark’s largest lead of the half (36-23) at the 2:30 mark.
Davis, who had 14 points, all in the first-half, was 4-for-6 from three-point range for Coast Guard in the frame.
The Cougars put the game away in the second half. Senior Jess Lamothe’s three-point play ignited a 12-4 burst that put Clark up, 65-44 with 8:05 to play. Coast Guard cut the lead to 18 (53-71) on a pair of free throws from Chanel Lee but would get no closer. Lee had a career-high eight points for the Bears.
Clark held a 51-39 advantage on the boards, but both teams shot poorly from the field. Clark shot 39.5 percent, while Coast Guard finished 29.1 percent for the game. However, the Bears shot 73.9 percent from the line, to Clark’s 61.5 percent.
