Andy Kauffman won the triple jump to give the Bears the victory.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(1/20/07)--Andy Kauffman leaped a career-best 42 feet, 3.75 inches on his last jump to win the triple jump, the final event of the day, and vault Coast Guard past Springfield to win the Coast Guard Invitational.

Kauffman's leap bumped Springfield jumper Nick DeCelle out of first place, that, combined with a 4th place finish by Tom Campbell and a 5th place jump by Tyler Ashner gave the Bears the thrilling victory overcoming a 149-145 deficit heading into the final event.

Also for Coast Guard, Thomas Adams won the 400 meters (52.55), Mike Flint won the mile (4:20.56) and Jason Erickson won the 600 meters (1:25.71).

The 4x400m relay of Thomas Adams, Pat Bennett, Pat Burnett and Erickson (3:32.54)and the 4x800m relay team of Flint, Pat Fernandez, Mike Haas and Stephen Bondira (8:22.43)were also winners for Coast Guard.

Coast Guard won with 161 points, Springfield was second with 157, Eastern Conn. was third with 112 points, Rhode Island College had 43 points, Conn. College 27 and Merchant Marine 23.
