Women's Basketball - Bears Hold off Mitchell 71-66
DeCarol Davis made three free throws in the final 21 seconds to ice the game for the Bears.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(1/16/07)--DeCarol Davis made three of four foul shots in the final 21 seconds as Coast Guard held off host Mitchell 71-66 in a non-league game between the two New London schools.
Coast Guard (9-5) had its largest lead of the night 67-58 with 4:29 left before Mitchell scored six straight to pull to within 67-64 with 1:12 remaining in the game.
Laura Hutchinson made one of two free throws for Coast Guard and then Alva Jeffreys made two freebies with 54 seconds left to cut the Bears lead to 68-66.
Davis knocked down two free throws with 21 seconds left and another with nine seconds left to seal the win.
Mitchell led 21-14 with 10:15 left in the first half before the Bears used a 19-5 spurt taking a 33-26 lead with 2:41 left. Coast Guard led 35-30 at halftime.
Melissa Martinelli registered her ninth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Natalie Moyer led Coast Guard with 18 points, Davis added 13 points and a team-high four assists while Laura Hutchinson had 12 points, as she hit 3 or 5 three-pointers for the Bears. Corinne McCormack had a game-high 12 rebounds for the Bears.
Alva Jeffreys led Mitchell (4-9) with 27 points and 10 steals while Shayna Barnes had a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.
