Al Sowers hit a three-pointer with 10:56 left to give Coast Guard the lead for good.
NEW LONDON, CONN.—(1/15/07)--Coast Guard used a 10-0 second half run and the Bears were nine for 10 from the foul line in the final minute capping a come-from-behind 65-60 win over rival Connecticut College. Coast Guard, the host team, snapped a two-game losing steak by beating the Camels for the third straight time.

Conn. College dominated play early as the Camels led 11-0 and 15-2 with 14:23 left in the first half.

Coast Guard (9-6) battled back using a 17-7 spurt to pull to within 22-19 with 7:40 left in the half. The Bears took their first lead of the game on a three-pointer by Grant Johnson with 2:41 left in the first half.

Jeff Young (12 points) buried a three-pointer at the buzzer and the game was tied 30-30 at the break.

Conn. College (10-6) led 42-37 with 15:24 left in the game when the Bears scored 10 straight taking a 47-42 lead with 8:53 left. Coast Guard took the lead for good 45-42 on a three-pointer by Al Sowers with 10:56 left.

Shavar Bernier, who led the Camels with 13 points, hit a three-pointer with 55.5 seconds left to cut the Coast Guard lead to one at 56-55.

Sowers made a pair of free throws with 42.4 seconds left giving Coast Guard a 58-55 lead and Stefan Lewis had a key steal which led to two more Sowers free throws with 28.6 seconds left giving the Bears a 60-55 lead.

Young hit a three-pointer with 22.2 seconds left to pull the Camels to 60-58.

Jeff Prebeck, who led Coast Guard with 16 points and nine rebounds, made two free throws with 21.6 seconds left and Sowers made one of two with 8.1 seconds left as Coast Guard led 63-58.

Prebeck was 8 for 12 from the foul line as the Bears made 23 of 32 in the game. He moved into ninth place on the Bears all-time scoring list with 1,042 points.

Sowers finished with 15 points and a game-high six assists while Johnson had 14 points including four three-pointers.

Will Lyons was also in double figures for Conn. College, which dropped its third straight, as he finished with 11 points. Young and Charles Stone led the Camels with eight rebounds each.
