NEW LONDON, CONN.—-(1/11/07)--Alex Krull had 31 points including the final seven of the game as MIT outscored Coast Guard 14-2 over the final 7:30 to pick up its first New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win of the season beating the Bears 62-59.
Al Sowers hit a three-pointer with 7:30 left in the game giving Coast Guard a its largest lead of the night 57-48, the Bears however would manage just one field goal the rest of the way.
Coast Guard (8-5, 1-2) led 59-55 following a basket by Jeff Prebeck with 4:41 left before Krull’s second straight hoop tied the game at 59-59 with with 1:51 left.
Krull, who was 12 for 18 from the floor (3-7 from three-point range), sank the second of two free throws for a 60-59 lead with 1:10 remaining. He then sank two free throws with 9.4 seconds left giving MIT the 62-59 lead.
Sowers missed a three-pointer in the closing seconds which would have tied the game.
Krull scored had 14 of MIT’s first 21 points as the Engineers led 21-18 with 7:45 left in the first half. MIT (7-7, 1-2) led 30-28 at halftime.
Jimmy Bartolotta added 12 points for MIT while Erich Bracht led the Engineers with nine rebounds. MIT shot 50 percent from the field (26 of 52).
Grant Johnson led Coast Guard with 17 points, including 4 of 4 from three-point range in the second half. Jeff Prebeck recorded his 12th straight double-double as he added 16 points to go with his game-high 10 rebounds. Al Sowers added 16 points and a game-high four assists, while Steve Blum had 10 rebounds for the Bears.
Coast Guard was 7 for 14 from three-point range in the second half as Johnson hit four and Sowers a trio of three’s which helped the Bears build a nine point lead. |
