 Natalie Moyer hit back-to-back three pointers to erase a five point deficit in overtime. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(1/6/07)--Coast Guard scored the final six points of regulation and Natalie Moyer had 10 of her game-high 20 points in overtime including back-to-back three-pointers erasing a five point deficit leading Coast Guard to a come-from-behind 62-54 win over MIT in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams.
The Engineers took a 42-36 lead on a three-pointer by Clara Yuan with two minutes left in regulation before Melissa Martinelli (18 points, 11 rebounds) had back-to-back buckets and Corinne McCormack sank a pair of three throws with 40.4 seconds left, the final points of regulation, to tie the game at 42-42.
MIT scored the first five points of overtime on a pair of free throws by Clara Yuan and a three-point basket by Kimberly Soo Hoo in the first minute before Moyer connected on back-to-back three pointers giving the Bears their first lead of the game 48-47, one they would not relinquish, with 3:09 left.
Coast Guard (6-4, 1-0) was a perfect 12 for 12 from the foul line in the final three minutes of overtime after going eight for eight from the foul line in the second half. Coast Guard was 24 for 28 from the foul line in the game.
MIT (3-8, 0-1) used a 13-2 run in the first half to take its largest lead of the game 23-11 with 3:53 left. Coast Guard was held to just one field goal in the final 10:30 of the first half as the Engineers led 23-15 at the break.
Sharon Prange led MIT with 20 points to go with 10 rebounds, Clara Yuan added 12 points while Christa Margossian had a game-high 13 rebounds for the Engineers.
Moyer, who now has 860 career points, moved into ninth place on the Bears all-time scoring list passing Diana Sharp (‘97), who had 850 points. |
