WORCESTER, MASS.--(1/6/07)--Jeff Prebeck had a career-high 33 points to go with a game-high 17 rebounds, his 10th straight double-double, but it wasn't enough as Coast Guard lost to Clark 102-91 in double overtime in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams.
With the win, Clark improves to 6-4 overall (1-0 NEWMAC), while Coast Guard falls to 7-4 (0-1 NEWMAC).
Mark Alexander stayed hot for the Cougars, going 11-15 from the floor on his way to a career-high 25 points and four steals. Peter Normandin scored 18 points, going 8-8 in free throws, while Dominique Beck added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double.
Al Sowers added 21 points and six assists while Grant Johnson added 14 points for Coast Guard.
In the first overtime Clark moved up by three (83-80) on a shot by Normandin with just over a minute left, but Sowers netted the equalizer with a deep shot beyond the arc. Johnson put Coast Guard up by two with a lay-up with only 23 seconds remaining, but Matt McLaughlin made a clutch basket to tie the score at 85-all with :12 showing on the clock.
Clark opened the second overtime on a 14-2 run, with eight points coming at the line, to secure the victory. Normandin was 6-6 at the stripe and Beck added five points during the spurt.
In a game that saw 26 total lead changes and 17 ties, Clark held a five-point (32-27) advantage following a pair of free throws by Beck with just over two minutes in the first half. Coast Guard battled back within one (31-32) going into the break.
The Cougars took an early lead (46-41) in the second half on a basket underneath by Reed Powell. Clark extended its lead to 53-47 following a three by Byron Roberts, but consecutive treys by Sowers and Johnson knotted the score at 53-all. Clark found an eight-point lead (68-60), its largest in regulation, after a lay-up by Alexander at the 6:50 mark. Coast Guard made a 10-0 run capped by a Johnson’s lay-up to take a 70-68 lead. A pair of baskets by Normandin put the Cougars up 74-72, but Prebeck’s shot tied the score (74-74) with :43 seconds remaining. Clark had a chance to win it, but Pat Ochoa’s three fell short as time expired.
Both teams shot 44.2% from the field. Clark forced 22 turnovers, while yielding just 12. Coast Guard held a slim 50-48 margin in rebounds.
