PROVIDENCE, R.I.-- (12/7/06)--Johnson & Wales posted a 67-58 victory over Coast Guard in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Tuesday evening.
Johnson & Wales had four players in double figures, including senior Samantha Cowens who registered a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds while sophomore Johanna Santosuossa added 13 points, three boards and two assists in the victory. Sophomore Maria Valletta and sophomore Shannon Hunter each scored 11 points while freshman Alexia Ramirez rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Wildcats with 11 points in the victory.
Junior Natalie Moyer led the way for Coast Guard with 20 points and six rebounds while fellow junior DeCarol Davis added 18 points, including five three pointers for the Bears in the setback.
Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead and took a 12-1 advantage after a jumper by Cowens with 14:50 left in the first half.
Coast Guard responded, however and cut into the Wildcats lead, climbing to with three points when a three-pointer by Davis made the score 14-11 with 7:45 on the clock. The visiting Bears took their first lead of the game late in the first half when another three-pointer by Davis gave Coast Guard the 20-19 lead with 3:34 remaining in the half. The two teams then traded baskets for the remainder of the half with Johnson & Wales taking a 25-24 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, the two teams traded leads in the early stages before Johnson & Wales used a 14-3 run, capped by a layup by Valletta to take a 51-42 lead with 7:27 remaining in the game.
Coast Guard cut the lead to just two points several times late in the half, but the Wildcats went 8-of-10 from the free throw line down the stretch take the 67-58 victory.
