Men's Basketball - Bears use 18-2 run to win 3rd Straight
Al Sowers led the Bears with 18 points and seven assists.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/28/06)--Coast Guard outscored Roger Williams 18-2 over the final 5:15 of the first half turning a 28-17 deficit into a 35-30 lead and the Bears never looked back handing the Hawks their first loss of the season 68-57 in a non-conference game.
Coast Guard led 50-44 with 9:30 left in the game before using a 12-2 spurt taking a 62-46 lead and putting the game out of reach.
Junior co-captain Al Sowers led four Bears in double figures with 18 points to go with seven assists while junior Jeff Prebeck had 16 points and a season-high 16 rebounds. Junior Grant Johnson added 16 points while freshman Eric Hudson had season-highs with 11 points and five assists as Coast Guard (3-1) won its third straight.
Sowers now has 242 career assists moving into fifth place on the Coast Guard all-time assists list. He passed both current Coast Guard women’s basketball coach Alex Simonka (‘79) who had 240 and Corey Morrison (‘97), who had 241 career assists.
Sophomore William Barrett led Roger Williams (3-1) with 22 points.
Coast Guard outrebounded the Hawks 44-31.
