CHICAGO, Ill.--(11/19/06)—Juniors Grant Johnson and Steve Blum each had 19 points and the Bears ended the game with a 17-4 run enroute to a 70-57 win over Earlham in the consolation game of the Midway Classic at the University of Chicago.
Coast Guard (1-1) had its biggest lead at the time at 53-45 on a Blum lay up with 9:48 to play before the Quakers used an 8-0 run to tie the game 53-53 with 6:57 left forcing the Bears to call time out.
Following the timeout, the Bears scored six straight and outscored the Quakers 17-4 the rest of the way.
Junior Al Sowers scored a bucket out of the timeout then Blum had a steal leading to a Johnson three-pointer before Blum hit one of two free throws for a 59-53 lead with 5:46 left.
In the first half, Johnson keyed an 18-4 run with a trio of three-pointers as the Bears turned a 22-13 deficit with 7:29 left in the opening stanza into a 31-26 lead with 2:38 left in the half. The Bears led 35-31 at halftime, Johnson led the Bears with 11 first half points. Jeff Prebeck had nine points and eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes for Coast Guard.
Blum, who led the Bears with a career-high 15 rebounds, was named to the All-tournament team. Prebeck, who was in foul trouble in the second half, also had a double-double for the Bears as he finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Sowers finished with 12 points and a game-high eight assists.
Markous Jewett led Earlham (0-2) with 23 points and eight rebounds.
