 Sophomore Nicole Gurr was named to the AVCA All-America team. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/13/06)--Sophomore Nicole Gurr has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America team while co-captains, senior Christine Rostowfske and junior Corinne McCormack were named honorable mention All-America for the Bears, who have advanced to the NCAA Division III volleyball tournaments Elite 8 for the first time in school history.
Gurr, a first-team All-NEWMAC, NEWVA and AVCA All-region selection this season, earned AVCA All-region honorable mention honors last season. Gurr leads the NEWMAC in kills per game (5.45), is third in aces per game (0.73), fourth in hitting percentage (.279) and sixth in blocks (.820).
Rostowfske, the NEWMAC Player of the Year, was also a first team All-NEWMAC, second team NEWVA and an AVCA-All region selection this season. Rostowfske earned AVCA honorable mention honors last season. She leads the NEWMAC with 12.6 assists per game. She is the Coast Guard Academy all-time leader with 4,218 career assists.
McCormack, the 2004 AVCA National Freshman of the Year, was a second-team All-conference, first team All-NEWVA and an AVCA All-region selection this season. McCormack earned honorable mention All-America honors for the second straight season. McCormack is third in the NEWMAC in kills per game (4.07), second in hitting percentage (.285) and second in aces per game (0.75). She is second on the Coast Guard Academy all-time kills list with 1,159 in her career.
The 36 members of the All-America team will be presented thier awards on Wednesday night at the NCAA Division III Women’s National Championship banquet at Salem, Va.
Coast Guard (26-2), which has won 22 straight matches, will take on the # 1 team in the nation, Juniata (38-1), on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m in the national quarterfinal. Juniata is the only team to appear in all 26 NCAA Division III Tournaments. |
