Football - Bears to Host Bridgewater State in ECAC North Atlantic Bowl
Coast Guard celebrated a win in the closing seconds against Bridgewater State on Oct. 14th.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/13/06)--The Coast Guard Academy football team which won the New England Football Conference’s (NEFC) Bogan Division and tied a school-record with eight straight wins, has been selected to host Bridgewater State in the ECAC North Atlantic Bowl on Saturday at noon.
The berth to the ECAC Bowl game is the first postseason appearance by Coast Guard since receiving a invitation to the NCAA Playoffs in 1997. Coast Guard has appeared in an ECAC postseason game only one other time. The Bears beat Plymouth State 28-19 for the ECAC North Championship.
Coast Guard (8-2) handed Bridgewater State (7-2) its only NEFC Bogan Division loss of the season, 21-17 on Oct. 14th at Bridgewater, Mass. as junior quarterback Christian George scored on a two-yard run with 50 seconds left.
Coast Guard was beaten 34-28 by Curry in the NEFC Championship game on Saturday. Bridgewater State closed out the season with three straight wins after losing to Coast Guard. Bridgewater has won seven of its last eight with the only loss coming to Coast Guard.
The Bridgewater State Bears won the ECAC Northeast Bowl at Fitchburg 34-17 last year.
Bridgewater State and Coast Guard feature the top two offenses in the NEFC. Bridgewater is averaging a league-best 391.8 yards per game while Coast Guard averages 359.7 yards per game. Bridgewater State is averaging a Bogan Division high 27.1 points per game while Coast Guard is second in the division with 26 points per game.
