THE SERIES: This is the first meeting between the two schools.
LAST WEEK: Sophomore quarterback Niles Pierson, making his second career start, tied a school record as he threw four touchdown passes and also ran for one, the first five touchdowns of his career, leading Coast Guard to its eighth straight win, a 42-21 win over Framingham State in a New England Football Conference Bogan Division game, the regular season finale for both team. Pierson was 24 for 33 with 288 yards with the four touchdown passes and the one touchdown run. He left the game with the Bears ahead 42-14 after three quarters.
Curry scored 23 consecutive points to turn a 21-6 UMass Dartmouth advantage into a 29-21 lead with 5:15 remaining and the Colonels remained unbeaten with a 43-34 shootout win. Curry rolled up 518 yards of total offense, 300 rushing while allowing 452 yards, 299 of those in the air. Senior Jarrad Jordan led the Colonels with 20 carries for 178 yards and a touchdown while sophomore Ryan Van De Giesen was 12 of 22 for 218 yards and four touchdowns, three of them went to junior Felix Borukhov, who caught four passes for 106 yards.
BEARS ARE STREAKING: Coast Guard, which had won just three games in the past two seasons combined, is riding an eight-game winning streak for the first time since the Bears won the all eight regular season games in 1963. Coast Guard has never won nine straight games in a single-season.
IT’S A HISTORIC WIN STREAK: In the 83 year history of Coast Guard Academy football only one time has a team won eight straight regular season games in a season. The only other team to win eight straight regular season games was the 1963 team which posted a perfect 8-0 mark in the regular season before losing to Western Kentucky 27-0 in the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando under head coach Otto Graham. The 1988 team won eight straight as they won the final seven regular season games and won the ECAC North Championship beating Plymouth State 28-19 for their eighth straight win.
SENIORS MORE THAN DOUBLE UP: The Coast Guard Academy senior class entered this season with seven wins (7 wins, 20 losses) in the last three years. The Bears are 8-1 this season.
SUCCESS IN LEAGUE PLAY: Coast Guard won all seven league games this season for the first time since the 1997 season when the Bears went a perfect 6-0 in the Freedom Football Conference and won their second straight league title. In 1997, Coast Guard also advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the second straight season. Coast Guard was a combined 0-14 in league play as a member of the Liberty League in 2004 and 2005.
MAKING THE MOST OF AN OPPORTUNITY: Sophomore Niles Pierson tied a school record by throwing four touchdown passes, the first four of his career, in the win over Framingham State on Saturday. Pierson, making just his second career start, also had the first rushing touchdown of his career. He completed 24 of 33 passes for 288 yards.
THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE: Coast Guard features the nation’s top thief in freshman Steve Arguelles, who had three more interceptions on Saturday to tie the single-season school record with 11. His 11 interceptions (1.2 game) are the most in Division III. In fact, his 11 interceptions are the most in Divisions I, II and III. The Coast Guard single-season record of 11 interceptions was held by Bill Bryant in 1973 and Ron Davies in 1989.
A TEAM OF HIS OWN: Steve Arguelles has 11 interceptions which is more than or equal to nine of the 16 teams in the NEFC. Coast Guard leads the way with 22.
IT’S AN HONOR: Sophomore quarterback Niles Pierson and freshman free safety Steve Arguelles were named to the NEFC weekly honor roll for their performances in the 42-21 win over Framingham State.
BEARS REMAIN AT 5TH IN TOP 10 POLL: Coast Guard has won eight straight games and the Bears are ranked 5th for the second straight in the latest New England Division III Football Poll. Springfield edged out Williams for the top spot as the Pride got seven of the 15 first place votes and 140 total points, one more total point than Williams.
