Niles Pierson tied a school-record with four touchdown passes
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/4/06)--Sophomore quarterback Niles Pierson, making his second career start, tied a school record as he threw four touchdown passes and also ran for one, the first five touchdowns of his career leading Coast Guard to its eighth straight win, a 42-21 win over Framingham State in a New England Football Conference Bogan Division game, the regular season finale for both teams.

The Coast Guard defense forced seven turnovers including a season-high six interceptions, three by freshman Steve Arguelles, who tied the Coast Guard single-season school record with 11 interceptions. The record was shared by Ron Davies (1989) and Bill Bryant (1973). Arguelles’ 11 interceptions this season are tops in the nation.

Coast Guard (8-1, 7-0), who won eight straight regular season games for the first time since 1963, finishes Bogan Division play a perfect 7-0 in their first season in the NEFC. The Bears will host Boyd Division champion and three-time defending NEFC champion Curry on Saturday at noon in the NEFC Championship Game.

Pierson, who was starting for the injured Christian George, was 24 for 33 with 288 yards with the four touchdown passes and the one touchdown run. He left the game with the Bears ahead 42-14 after three quarters.

Coast Guard, came out and dominated the first quarter rolling up 158 yards of total offense while holding the Rams to 15 total yards while taking a 14-0 lead on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Pierson to David Sauls (4 catches, 76 yards, 2 TD) with 9:31 left and a three-yard touchdown run by Lance Lynch with 1:54 left in the quarter.

Framingham State (0-8, 1-7) cut the lead in half on a one-yard run by Lucas Guarino (17 carries, 76 yards) with 11:14 left in the first half. Guarino had the key play in the drive a 42-yard run on third-and-three.

Coast Guard added a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter as Pierson threw an eight-yard touchdown to senior tight end Luke Spurrier with 4:47 left in the half, the first catch of his career, and then Pierson threw a nine-yard touchdown to Sam England as the Bears took a 28-7 with 1:06 left in the first half. England led Coast Guard with eight catches for 80 yards.

Pierson was 17 of 24 for 196 yards with three touchdowns in the first half as Coast Guard totaled 252 first half yards.

On Coast Guard’s first play from scrimmage in the second half, Sauls was hit as he caught a pass and Adam Emery intercepted it and went 43 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 28-14 with 14:16 left in the third quarter.

Pierson scored on a two-yard run and Sauls caught his second touchdown of the game, another 27-yarder with 1:02 left in the third quarter as the Bears took a 42-14 lead.

Framingham State quarterback Bryce Guilbeault (26 of 46, 230 yards, 1 TD, 6 INT) threw a 34-yard touchdown to Bill Meuse with 3:58 left to close the scoring. Meuse led Framingham State with 10 catches for 118 yards while Anthony Kewley had eight catches for 57 yards.

Sophomore Rob Woods led the Coast Guard ground attack with 14 carries for a career-high 86 yards as the Bears rushed for 107 yards.
Coast Guard finished with 419 yards of total offense while Framingham totaled 338 yards, 230 yards passing.

Coast Guard’s Pat Bennett had his second interception of the season while seniors Vince Vasaturo and Chuck Arena each had their first career interceptions.
