Women's Basketball - Moyer Has Record Breaking Season Print E-mail
Sophomore Natalie Moyer had the best season ever by a Coast Guard Academy women’s basketball player. Quite simply, Moyer was unstoppable from the season-opening 30 point game vs. Division I Army to her 26 point performance in the Bears loss to WPI in the first round of the NEWMAC Tournament and she was named first team All-conference at the end of the season.

Moyer absolutely shattered three single-season records as Coast Guard posted an 11-15 overall record and 6-7 mark in conference play, which was a great success considering the team returned just three players that averaged over four points per game.

The Bears needed someone to step up this season and score and that is exactly what Moyer did night in and night out as she set single-season school records with 547 points, 95 three-pointers and then in the final home game of the season, Moyer erupted for a single-game record 47 points in a 84-63 win over Babson. She became the first men’s or women’s basketball player in Coast Guard history to score over 500 points in a single-season.

Jen Revelle (1988-89) held the single-season mark with 440 points, Tessa Mueller (2002-2003) held the three-point record with 74 in a season and Phyllis Blanton (1985-86) held the single-game mark of 34. Moyer had 32 of her record 47 points in the first half.

Moyer was the only player in the NEWMAC to earn Player of the Week honors more than once as she did it three times. She led the conference in scoring (21.0) and three-pointers per game (3.7). She was also second on the team with 6.3 rebounds per game. Moyer scored over 20 points in 15 of the 25 games.

The Bears had to play the final eight games of the season without their second leading scorer DeCarol Davis, whose season was cut short with stress fractures in both her legs. Davis was averaging 12.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.

Sophomore Katie Colella (7.5 ppg.) saw plenty of extra minutes in place of Davis and finished the season second on the team with 46 three-pointers and she was first in the NEWMAC shooting 36.5 percent from behind the arc. She had three games in which she hit at least six three-pointers, all Coast Guard wins, including her seven-for-eight shooting performance from three-point range in a 75-57 win at Albertus Magnus.

Senior center Mary Arvidson had another solid season in the front court as she averaged 9.9 points and led the conference with 11 rebounds per game. She closed out her career fifth all-time in school history with 637 rebounds. Her best game of the season was her 27 point and 18 rebound performance in a key 76-64 win at Wheaton. Earlier in the season, she tied the Coast Guard single-game rebounding record of 22 held by Lisa Tamblingson set vs. MIT in the 1983 season. Mary recorded 10 double-doubles this season and she had a string late in the season with five straight double-double performances.

Forward Regina Dunn, the Bears defensive specialist, for the past three seasons, started every game and guard/forward Jen Makowski, who saw plenty of minutes during the season and made seven starts are the only two other seniors on the team, so the Bears return plenty in the backcourt next season in Moyer, Davis, Colella and point guard Laura Hutchinson, who led the team this season with 94 assists.
