Bears celebrate following the Steve Arguelles Interception in the final minute
BRIDGEWATER, MASS.--(10/14/06)--Junior quarterback Christian George scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 50 seconds left in the fourth quarter to lift visiting Coast Guard Academy to a 21-17 come-from-behind victory over host Bridgewater State College this afternoon in Bridgewater in the battle of NEFC Bogan Division unbeatens.

George completed 17 of 24 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 65 yards and two scores as Coast Guard not only spoiled BSC’s Homecoming festivities but also took hold of sole possession of first place in the NEFC Bogan Division. Coast Guard is now 5-1 overall and 4-0 in divisional play, while Bridgewater falls to 4-2 and 3-1 in the Bogan Division.

Bridgewater had opened the scoring in the second quarter on a 33-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Greg Borsari to wide out Chris Joyce. Coast Guard came right back to tie the game at 7-7 as George connected with Erik Wyrick on a 26-yard scoring strike.

On BSC’s next possession, the Bears moved the ball 61 yards on 13 plays capped off by a Brian DiCristoforo 21-yard field goal to reclaim the lead, 10-7, with 2:10 left in the half. Bridgewater then forced a three-and-out as Coast Guard had to punt from their own 16-yard line.

Bridgewater took over at their own 47 and then had to move back 15 yards as they were flagged for offensive pass interference on the first play of the drive. Borsari then connected for back-to-back completions as he hit Nate Stearns with a 23-yard pass followed by a 19-yard strike to Bobby McCarthy to move the ball down to the Coast Guard 26 with 20 second left on the clock. After two incomplete passes, Borsari connected with Stearns on a 26-yard touchdown pass with just two seconds left in the half. The ensuing extra point by DiCristoforo increased BSC’s lead to 17-7.

Trailing 17-7 at the half, Coast Guard moved the ball 61 yards on 10 plays on the opening drive of the third quarter capped off by a George 1-yard TD run. David Lieberman’s extra point cut the deficit to 17-14.

Later in the third quarter, Bridgewater put together a 17-play drive which took 6 minutes and 46 seconds off the clock. The drive however stalled on the Coast Guard 17-yard line as they failed to convert on fourth down. The first of several huge stops for the Coast Guard defense in the second half.

On the ensuing possession, Coast Guard moved the ball 59 yards on 12 plays down to the BSC 24. Bridgewater’s defense came up big however as Anthony Sperrazza intercepted a pass in the end zone to squash the scoring opportunity.

The BSC defense came up big again on Coast Guards next possession as Chris Dijak forced a fumble (BSC third forced turnover of the game) which was recovered by Robert Morrissey at the Bears’ 45-yard line. Bridgewater looked to put the game away as they moved the ball down to the Coast Guard 26, but on fourth and seven Borsari’s pass was dropped and Coast Guard defense again got a big stop giving the ball back to the offense at the 26 with 3:43 remaining in the fourth quarter.

George then led Coast Guard on the game-winning drive as they easily moved the ball 74 yards on 10 plays. George completed 4 of 5 passes for 57 yards and also rushed for 12 yards during the drive. Two of his completions came on big third down plays as he threw a 19-yard pass to a Sam England on third and five from the Coast Guard 44, and a 20-yarder to Wyrick on third and eight from the BSC 35.
