Four members of the Coast Guard Athletic Family were honored on Thursday night with the Spirit of the Bear Award presented by Admiral Robert J. Papp Jr., the commandant of the Coast Guard and Rear Admiral Sandra L. Stosz, the Academy Superintendent.
The Spirit of the Bear Award, sponsored by the Institute for Leadership, highlights the belief that Leader Development is a team effort. The winners have shown a great deal of dedication mentoring cadets and officer candidates. Nominations are taken from all members of the Academy community.
Bruce Cobb, the Bears equipment manager, LCDR Jess Rozzi-Ochs, an assistant coach with the women’s soccer team, Aaron Parker, an assistant women’s volleyball coach and Paul Duddy, the Bears Super Fan, were among those honored on Thursday night.
Cobb, who garnered the most nominations of any recipient, was called an inspiration and an individual who always has a smile on his face and goes above and beyond in his work. Cobb was described in one nomination as someone who lives and breathes Coast Guard Athletics.
Rozzi-Ochs, an instructor in the Engineering Department, has been chosen by many cadets as honor or respect remediation mentor when they are facing challenging times. Cadets seek out advice from her because they trust her to be fair and give them the best advice possible.
Parker, who works in the office of Diversity and Inclusion, has intervened early and often in the lives of dozens of cadets and his contributions often turn around cadet performance, both in and out of the classroom.
Duddy, known to every cadet, left the Coast Guard Academy in 1973, but his hobby of photography, has made him a fixture at Coast Guard sporting events . The Bears “Super Fan”, Duddy, posts hundreds of pictures each week for the corp of cadets and their parents to enjoy. His involvement extends beyond the playing fields as he is constantly in attendance at formals and drills.
