Seven Athletes Honored During Parents' Weekend Print E-mail

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/17/11)--Seven Coast Guard Academy cadet-athletes were honored with the presentation of prestigious academic and leadership awards during the Academy’s Parents’ Weekend, held October 13-15.

The women’s crew team had three individuals honored as senior Sarah Jane Otey won the George C. Alexander and Robert T. Alexander Excellence in Chemistry and Physics Awards which are presented to the cadets with the highest academic standing in courses in Chemistry and Physics. Otey, who is also a member of the Coast Guard swim team, won for Physical Chemistry and Analytical Methods.

Junior Jessica Ward, a member of the women’s crew team, won the Commandant’s Undergraduate Award which is presented to the cadet who had the highest academic standing during sophomore year.

Sophomore Catherine Durand, the third crew honoree and also a diver on the women's swim team, won the Ensign David A. Hoffman Award which is presented to the cadet who had the highest academic standing during their freshman year.

Senior Peter Imbriale, a member of the indoor and outdoor track teams, won the Society of the Cincinnati Award which is presented to the cadet who had the highest cumulative Military Precedence List average at the end of junior year.

Junior Ben Wolhaupter, also a member of both the indoor and outdoor track teams, won the RADM Thomas Davies Award that is presented to the cadet who demonstrated excellence in navigation planning and execution during their first year at the Academy.

Senior Jacob Shackleford, the punter and kicker on the football team, won the Officer Spouses Association Academic Achievement Award which is presented to the cadet who had the most improved academic standing from freshman year to junior year.

Junior Geddy Miller, also a member of the football team won the Cadet Jonathan K. Briese Outstanding Summer Cadet Leadership Awards which are presented to the four summer cadre members who were voted by their peers as the most inspirational leaders during the summer indoctrination program. Miller was recognized for his performance as EAGLE cadre this past summer.

The Coast Guard Combat Veteran’s Awards presented to the male and female cadets who excel in the Obstacle Course and Entry Physical Fitness Exam during their Swab Summer went to Jadarius Bruce, a member of the football team and Mary Hazen a member of both the cross country and track teams.

“We are very proud of the achievements of these outstanding cadet-athletes,” said Director of Athletics Tim Fitzpatrick. “It is wonderful and appropriate for their achievements beyond the realm of competitive athletics recognized by the Academy with such prestigious awards.”
