ImageNEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/12/11)--The U.S. Coast Guard Academy, in conjunction with U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), will honor three retired Coasties during the Saturday, October 15 home football game against Westfield State.

Lieutenant Sancho Johnson, Chief Petty Officer C.J. Shunk, and Petty Officer Mike Bell were all members of the 2011 Coast Guard team that competed at the 2011 Warrior Games, a competition for wounded, ill and injured servicemen, women and veterans, all of whom have a physical or visual disability. The second annual competition was a collaborative effort between the Department of Defense and U.S. Paralympics.

All three athletes have used sport to enhance their rehabilitation process and can attest to the power of physical activity in their lives. Research shows that participation in regular, physical activity provides clear benefits for wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans, including less stress, reduced dependency on pain and depression medication, higher achievement in education and employment, and better overall health.
