WEST HARTFORD, CONN.--(9/1/10)--Saint Joseph senior Eva Pert had a goal and an assist leading the Blue Jays to a 2-0 win over Coast Guard in the season opener for both teams.

St. Joseph outshot the Bears 15-4 in the first half, yet the game remained scoreless as Coast Guard junior Mary Mills recorded 13 first half saves.

Stacey Rutledge’s goal just 1:10 into the second half gave the Blue Jays all they would need.

Peart, who assisted on Rutledge’s goal, added an insurance goal in the 59th minute as St. Joseph beat Coast Guard for the first time in the five meetings between the two schools.

Mills, who led the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) with 205 saves last season, had 16 saves in the loss as the Bears were outshot 22-9.

Junior Shannah Shelton had three of the Bears’ nine shots on the afternoon.

Holly Mirabella had five saves to record the shutout win for St. Joseph.
