Jesse Karr is locked in a three-way battle for the starting quarterback spot this season. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(8/24/10)--Coast Guard has been picked to finish fifth in the Bogan Division in the New England Football Conference (NEFC) Pre-Season Coaches Poll.
The Bears were 4-5 overall and 4-3 in the division last season, finishing fourth.
Last year, Coast Guard didn’t have a quarterback that had taken a collegiate snap heading into the season while this year, the Bears return three talented signal callers that have already proven themselves. This sets the stage for what should be an exciting battle for the starting spot as head coach Bill George welcomes back 14 starters, four on offense, eight on defense, the punter and the kicker.
Senior tri-captain Jesse Karr, junior Jarrod Owens and sophomore Jon Resch have all played well during the first two weeks of practice as the battle for the starting spot heats up.
Curry College and Maine Maritime Academy, the two participants in the 2009 New England Football Conference Championship game have been selected as the pre-season favorites in the Boyd Division and the Bogan Division. Curry was also tabbed by the coaches as the pre-season favorite to earn the Conference’s automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
In the Boyd, Curry, the 2009 Boyd Division titlist, received six first place votes. Plymouth State University and Endicott College had one first place vote each. In the Bogan, Maine Maritime captured five first place nods, with the other three going to Bridgewater State College.
The 16 conference coaches put forth their selections for the eventual conference champion with Curry receiving 11 votes, Plymouth State and Maine Maritime received two votes each, and Bridgewater State was named on one ballot.
Coast Guard opens the season at home on Sept. 11th when the host Merchant Marine in the annual battle for the Secretaries’ Cup with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m.
The NEFC Championship game, pitting the champions of the Bogan and Boyd Divisions, will be held on Saturday, November 13 at noon at the site of the Bogan Division Champion.
