NEW LONDON, CONN.--(5/24/10)--Coast Guard freshman pitcher Tyler Vieira has been named to the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-New England Division III third team.

Vieira and the Bears advanced all the way to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament championship game and ended the season with a record of 12-18.

The freshman right hander posted the sixth best single-season ERA in school history with an earned run average of 1.78.

He made 16 appearances all in relief and tied for the team lead with three wins as he finished the season with a 3-1 record. Vieira threw 35.3 innings and allowed just seven earned runs while walking 15 and striking out a team-high 42 batters. His opponents hit just .194 off of him.

Vieira was even better and a key component of the Bears run to the NEWMAC championship game as he won a pair of games in relief and allowed just one unearned run in 9.3 innings of work in those two games.

He becomes the first Coast Guard player to earn All-New England honors since Chuck Arena and Mike Jarbeau both were named to the third team in 2006.
