Amanda Frederick set a trio of records and was 7 for 8 at the plate in the two wins. WELLESLEY, MASS.--(5/15/10)--Amanda Frederick capped her 7 for 8 performance at the plate by going 4 for 4 with a pair of RBI's and set Coast Guard's single-season and career RBI marks as well as single-season hits record as Coast Guard won a pair of games to remain alive in the NCAA Regional Softball Tournament at Wellesley College.
In the first game of the day, the third-seeded Bears eliminated fourth-seeded Bowdoin 5-1 before knocking out sixth-seeded Salem State 7-1 in the Bears second game of the day.
Frederick continues to swing a red-hot bat in the NCAA tournament as she is hitting .733 (11-15) with three doubles, a homer and ten RBI's in the four games.
Coast Guard will take on second-seeded Brandeis at noon on Sunday in the loser's bracket final. The Judges beat the Bears 7-6 on Friday.
In the opener, Coast Guard opened an early lead as Frederick rapped an RBI single in the first and followed with an RBI double in the third to give the Bears a 2-0 edge. Her double in the second broke the single-season school record of 63 hits held by Jackie Finlan ('99). Frederick finished the day with 69 hits.
Bowdoin cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third, when Hillary Smyth led off with a double, advanced to third on Kara Nilan's single, and scored on an illegal pitch to make the score 2-1.
Coast Guard responded in the fifth, when Frederick hammered her second double of the game, driving in two for a 4-2 advantage. The Bears added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI double from Jamie Kim before cruising to the 5-1 win.
Frederick led the Bears, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Kim and Holli Bastnick added one hit and one RBI each.
Hayley Feindel picked up her 30th win of the season, improving to 30-9 on the season. She struck out seven while allowing one run on seven hits.
For Bowdoin, Nilan was 3-for-3 while Smyth added two hits, including a double. Nilan, 12-5, was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits.
In game two, Frederick was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 and drove in three runs. She broke the single-season RBI record of 49 set by Suzie Van der Veer (2002) as she now has 51 on the season. Frederick also broke Van der Veer's career RBI mark of 135 as the junior catcher has now driven in 138 runs in her three-year career thus far.
Coast Guard opened a lead with three runs in the first, including an RBI single from Courtney Wolf and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Carin Sweeney. The Bears added two more in the second, with singles from Kim, Frederick, and Bastinck, and two more in the fourth for a 7-0 advantage.
Feindel was over powering on the mound, allowing just one hit and no runs through four frames. But Salem State got on the board in the fifth, when Michelle Grifoni led off with a single and eventually scored on a fielder's choice to trim the lead to 7-1. But the Vikings could get no closer as Feindel sealed the win with two scoreless innings in the circle.
