New London, CT--(4/25/10)--Coast Guard had its best Thompson Trophy in several years, finishing 9th out of 18 teams. The Thompson Trophy, which is named after Rear Admiral Bernie E. Thompson, USCGA ’48, and Marie Thompson, Connecticut College ’50, and symbolizes the relationship that the two Thames River teams have had over the years, was hosted by Coast Guard in both FJs and 420s. Saturday brought great racing conditions during which the Race Committee was able to complete ten races in each division. Conditions were much tougher on Sunday, resulting in only three races sailed in each division.

B-Division sailors Ian Oviatt ’10 and Tanya Cuprak ’11 made the best of the situation on Sunday, going 3-1-1 in the only three races sailed to end the regatta. Their performance solidified the Bears’ 9th place finish, surging up the results three places from the end of the day on Saturday. Oviatt and Cuprak finished 7th in their division with 101 points. Sailing in A-Division, Sam Ingham ’11 and Matt Stroebel ’12 finished 13th with 131 points. The team combined for 232 points. Roger Williams won the regatta with 163 points. College of Charleston was 2nd with 172 and Hobart and William Smith Was 3rd with 175 points.

The Women’s team ended another season in a frustrating fashion, finishing 8th at the Reed Trophy for the Women’s New England Championship, where seven teams advance to the National Championship. After the six races that were sailed in each division on Saturday, the Lady Bears found themselves six points out of 7th going into the final day. Although they got off to a great start and had a four point lead over Dartmouth going into the last set, the Lady Bears were unable to seal the deal and watched their post-season chances fade away, finishing one spot out of qualifying for the second straight year.

Sailing for the Bears were Krysta Rohde ’11, Kirstin Haas ’10, and Elise Maher ’11 in A-Division, who finished 9th with 80 points. Jenn Proctor ’11, Margaret Woodbridge ’10, and Amanda Hamlet ’12 finished 7th in B-Division with 61 points. The team combined for 141 points. The home team, Brown University, won the event with 80 points and a commanding lead over 2nd place Harvard, who had 96 points. Boston College finished 3rd with 99 points.
