Men's Tennis - Bears Advance to NEWMAC Semifinals
Chris Pappe won both his singles and doubles match as the Bears beat Clark 5-2.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/22/10)--Nick Martin and Blake Maurer each won their singles matches and teamed to win at #2 doubles as third-seeded Coast Guard beat sixth-seeded Clark 5-2 in the quarterfinal round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament.
Martin won 6-0, 6-1 at #2 singles outside while Maurer recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win at #4 singles once the match was moved indoors due to lightning and rain.
The duo of Martin and Maurer won 8-1 at # 2 doubles while the Bears' #1 doubles team of Greg Mitchell and Chris Pappe won 8-3.
The Bears' fifth and deciding point came from Pappe – he won the #3 singles 7-5, 6-4. The two matches that did not finish had sophomore Greg Mitchell leading 7-6(0), 2-1 at #1 singles and sophomore Matt Faha trailing 2-6, 1-1 at #6 singles.
The Bears improve to 10-9 overall and will play second-seeded Wheaton College on Saturday in a semifinal contest at 10:30 am at Connecticut College. Wheaton had a bye into the semifinals.
Top-seeded and 11-time NEWMAC champion MIT will play fourth-seeded Babson College in the other semifinal at Coast Guard at 10:30 am. Babson won its quarterfinal match tonight over Springfield College, 5-1.
The NEWMAC championship match will be played at Coast Guard following the semifinals.
