New London, CT--(4/18/10)--Two major events were sailed on the Thames River this weekend that offered beautiful racing conditions on Saturday, followed by frustrating shifty conditions on Saturday. At the New England Dinghy Championship for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Alumni Bowl, the Bears finished 13th in a very competitive field of some of the country’s best sailors all trying to earn a berth to the National Championship. Sam Ingham ’11 and Amanda Hamlet ’12 finished 10th in A-Division with 169 points and eight top-10 finishes. In B-Division, Jon Duffett ’11 and Tanya Cuprak ’11 finished 13th with 186 points and a win in race 10. The team combined for 355 points. Boston College finished with 177 points to become the New England Dinghy Champions for the fourth straight year. Yale finished second with 217 points and Brown was third with 232 points
The second event in New London this weekend was the Women’s Emily Wick/Sloop Shrew hosted by Coast Guard, for the first year as an intersectional. The event attracted sixteen teams from the East Coast, eleven of which are nationally ranked. The Lady Bears had a very strong performance, finishing 8th with 202 points. Krysta Rohde ’11 and Elise Maher ’11 finished 8th in A-Division with 110 points and seven top-4 finishes. In B-Division, Jenn Proctor ’11 and Kristen Holloway’s ’12 consistency kept them with only two races outside of the top-10. They finished 6th in their division with 92 points. College of Charleston won the regatta with 126 points. Dartmouth was second with 147 points and Brown was third with 169 points.
At the Short Beach Invitational hosted by Yale, ten races were sailed in a combined division format. Tom Chronert ’13 and Claire Miller ’12 finished 8th with 74 points. Jake Tronaas ’12 and Justine Morrison ’13 finished 12th with 99 points.
Next weekend, the Women’s Team competes for a berth to the National Semi-Finals at the Women’s New England Dinghy Championship for the Reed Trophy hosted by Brown. The Coed team will be at home for the Thompson Trophy, which will wrap up Coast Guard’s hosting season.
