Women's Crew - Bears Place 3rd at NEWMAC Championships

WORCESTER, MASS.--(4/17/10)--For the second straight season, Smith College captured the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Rowing Championship on a rainy Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester on Saturday morning.
The Pioneers edged out Wellesley by three-tenths of a second to claim the program’s third title in the last six years and their sixth overall. Coast Guard was also right in the mix finishing just behind Wellesley to finish third.
In addition to their first-place finish in the Varsity Eight race, Smith won its second straight Florence Jope Smith Cup, which is awarded to the program with the most overall points in the day’s races.
The defending champions crossed the finish line in a time of 6:59.8, just ahead of Wellesley (7:00.1), while Coast Guard finished third and Mount Holyoke ended up fourth. WPI and Clark rounded out the six boat contingent.
Smith also scored victories in both the First Novice Eight (7:24.3) and in the Third Varsity Eight (7:44.9), while Wellesley claimed the title in the Second Varsity Eight (7:11.0).
Coast Guard placed fourth in the second Varsity 8 race with a time of 7:35.4. Wellesley won in 7:11.
Coast Guard sophomores Kelli Normoyle and Rachel Thomas earned spots on the All-conference team while freshman Jessica Ward was named to the Novice All-conference team for the Bears.
