Nick Martin teamed with Blake Maurer to win at #2 doubles. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/15/10)--The Coast Guard Academy tennis team hosted 18th ranked Trinity today. The Bantams took the dual match 7-2.
Just as the doubles started a cold weather front moved in that was accompanied by wind gusts and dropping temperature that made conditions difficult for tennis. Trinity’s #3 team of freshmen Kyle Boquslawski and Michael Pucci combined to win the first point over senior Cody Isaacson and junior Anthony Foss 8-2. But on the other two doubles courts it was the Bears who were handling the conditions and playing great tennis. On the #1 court, senior captain Chris Pappe and sophomore Greg Mitchell traded service breaks with Trinity’s sophomore Anson McCook and freshman Dan Couzens. Mitchell and Pappe broke again to go up 7-6 and Mitchell held serve to take the #1 doubles 8-6.
On court #2 sophomore Nick Martin and freshman Blake Maurer were also playing great doubles, and doing a brilliant job of handling the wind. When the Trinity team of sophomore Charles McConnell and senior Adam Lanza came to net with the wind at their back, Martin and Maurer hit deep topspin lobs and took the net. The frustrated McConnell and Lanza, were unable to handle the wind and the Bear’s solid play – they fell 8-5, and for the second time in five days, the Bears had a 2-1 lead in a dual match with a nationally ranked team.
In the singles however, Trinity showed why they are ranked 18th, winning all six singles in straight sets. Pappe and sophomore Matt Faha had the best results losing 6-3, 6-4.
The 8-8 Bears (2-2 in the NEWMAC) travel to Springfield College Saturday morning for the final NEWMAC conference match of the season. |
