Women's Crew - Bears Win Three at Lowell Print E-mail
LOWELL, MASS.--(4/10/10)--The Coast Guard Bears raced hard on Saturday resulting in three boat wins, and a second place finish when they met up against fellow DIII competitors Colby College, UMass, Lowell and Roger Williams.

The women’s varsity four began the morning of racing vs UML and RW. Having practiced twice previously in the four, the Bears competed well, placing five seconds down to UML, and finishing well ahead of Roger Williams. Racing for Coast Guard, was (Soph) C Sarah Troch, (Sen) 4 Rachel Douglas, (Soph) 3 Christine Roselli, (Soph) 2 Kathleen Priesing, and (Frosh) 1 Jessica VanHorn.

Lowell won in 7:02 while the Bears finished in 7:07 and Roger Williams had a time of 8:03.

Next off the line was Coast Guard’s 2nd Varsity 8 comprised of (Frosh) C Stephanie Bugyis, (Soph) 8 Kathleen Priesing, (Frosh) 7 Jessica VanHorn, (Sen) 6 Rachel Douglas, (Soph) 5 Christine Roselli, (Soph) 4 Morgan Wilder, (Frosh) 3 Rachel Rand, (Frosh) 2 Colleen Patton, and (Frosh) bow Tahnee Zaccano. With a strong start off the line, the Bears pushed ahead of Colby then, handling the rough conditions well, Coast Guard (6:19) was able to stay out front for the remainder of the race, finishing 14 seconds ahead of Colby (6:33).

After the second Varsity 8, the Novice 8 made their debut against UMass Lowell. In a tight race down the entirety of the course, Coast Guard (6:36) pulled off a one second victory over UML (6:37). Racing for the Bears were (Frosh) C Stephanie Bugyis, (Soph) 8 Morgan Wilder, (Frosh) 7 Tahnee Zaccano, (Frosh) 6 Colleen Patton, (Frosh) 5 Rachel Rand, (Frosh) 4 Gabbey Lemly, (Frosh) 3 Jamie Wright, (Soph) 2 Rachel LeClaire, and (Frosh) bow Christine Case.

Last, but not least, the women’s varsity eight consisting of (Soph) C Julianna Harvin, (Soph) 8 Rachel Thomas, (Soph) 7 Holly Madden, (Soph) 6 Tiffany Zehnle, (Soph) 5 Emily Balingit-Clark, (Soph) 4 Erin Nolan, (Frosh) 3 Jessica Ward, (Soph) 2 Kelli Normoyle, and (Frosh) bow Catherine Schmitz competed against Colby’s V8. In an aggressive battle with both the Mules and the conditions, the Bears pushed hard through whitecaps during the first 800m. Pulling ahead, the women made it their mission to stay ahead. They were able to do just that, and come into this week’s NEWMAC Championship a bit more confident and experienced. The Bears won with a time of 5:57 while Colby finished in 6:10.
