Derek Petty pitched six strong innings as the Bears beat WPI 5-3.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/6/10)--Freshman Derek Petty pitched six solid innings and senior Steve Arguelles had a two-run triple to highlight a three-run fourth inning as Coast Guard snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over WPI, ranked fourth in New England, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

WPI scored in the first on an RBI single by senior Jameson Kokolis before Coast Guard tied the game in the second on a sacrifice fly by freshman Eric Gerken.

The Engineers took a 2-1 lead in the third on an RBI double by senior Mike Swanton.

In the fourth, Gerken had an RBI single to tie the game 2-2 before Arguelles’ triple put the Bears ahead 4-2. The Bears added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single by freshman Cameron Carroll.

WPI rallied in the ninth as senior Mark Dignum had an RBI single to make the score 5-3, then a walk and hit batter loaded the bases, but freshman Tyler Babkiewich got a strikeout to end the game.

Petty (2-3) worked six innings and allowed five hits and a pair of earned runs while walking four and striking out five to pickup the win. Freshman Tyler Vieira worked 1 1/3 innings and didn’t allow a hit while striking out three. Junior Ben Barrett followed with one inning of hitless relief with a strikeout. Babkiewich worked the final 2/3 of an inning and picked up the save.

Senior Ryan Marques (4-1) went the distance allowing nine hits and five runs, all earned, to suffer his first loss of the season.

Freshman Nolan Gallagher added two hits and scored a pair of runs for the Bears while Arguelles also had a pair of hits in the win for the Bears.

Dignum and Kokolis each had a pair of hits for WPI.
