STORRS, CONN.--(4/3/10)--On a beautiful Easter weekend the CGA Varsity women raced in their second regatta of the season against tough competitors DI, UConn and DIII, 2009 NCAA 3rd place finishers, Trinity College.
In a strong early season showing, the young varsity eight consisting of sophomores (C) Julianna Harvin, (8) Rachel Thomas, (7) Holly Madden, (6) Tiffany Zehnle, (5) Emily Balingit-Clark, (4) Erin Nolan, freshman (3) Jessica Ward, sophomore (2) Kelli Normoyle, and freshman Catherine Schmitz aggressively worked into Trinity for 1,700 meters of the 2,000 meter course, finishing in a time of 7:10.97, only four seconds behind the Bantams and eight seconds off the Huskies by race’s end.
The women's second varsity eight raced UConn and Trinity on Saturday at Lake Coventry. The Bear's lineup consisted of Katie Priesing (So), Jess VanHorn (Fr), Morgan Wilder (So), Christine Roselli (So), Rachel Rand (Fr), Jamie Wright (So), Colleen Patton (Fr), Tahnee Zaccano (Fr) and Steph Bugyis (Fr) as coxswain.
The Bears kept up with the competition until UConn and Trinity walked away at the 1000 meter mark. After coming in third at the finish, the race was challenged by another team claiming oars clashed between UConn and Trinity. All three teams turned to race again. In the second race, the women's 2V showed excellent stamina, finishing just over 12 seconds slower than their first race.
Next Saturday, the Bears will be at it again against up-and-coming UMass, Lowell and fellow DIII competitor, Colby College.
