Kings Point, NY--(4/4/10)--As reported by 4/c Ben Williamsz : The Coast Guard finished very well this weekend at the King’s Point Cup Regatta hosted by the Merchant Marine Academy, with 8 total wins and only 5 losses. Although final scores have yet to be calculated, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine were very close in almost every one of the 18 matches sailed, often finishing less than a boat length apart.

The first Coast Guard boat had an impressive record of 6 wins and 1 loss. Skippered by Eric Johnson ’10, it was crewed by Stephen Hills ’10, Alex Lloyd ’12, and Stephanie Mewes ’13. The other Coast Guard boat, skippered by Jonathan Hammond ‘13, and crewed by Dan Langston ’10, Ben Wilson ’11, and Ben Williamsz ’12 had a final record of 2 wins and 4 losses.

Conditions on Saturday morning proved perfect for easing into match racing, with a steady breeze of no more than 6 knots. Saturday afternoon, however, was far more intense, with breeze filling in to about 15 knots, which proved challenging as racers struggled to keep the Sonars flat in the water upwind. Although racing was cancelled on Sunday for a lack of breeze, the day was not lost as sailing coaches spent time with cadets from both academies in the classroom building and honing match racing skills in preparation for the upcoming Intrepid Regatta.
