New London, CT--(4/4/10)--Coast Guard, along with Connecticut College, played host of the biggest and most competitive team race of the spring season, the Southern New England Team Race. On Saturday, the field of sixteem teams were seeded and sent to either venue for a qualification round robin. The qualifying round determined which teams would sail at in the gold fleet or silver fleet for the rest of the regatta. In the qualifying round, Coast Guard posted a 3-4 record which left them 5th and just one spot shy of making it to the gold fleet. In one of their best qualifying rounds in several years, the Bears lost a few races right at the finish line that would have pushed them into the gold.

After two full round robins of close competition in the silver fleet, the Bears found themselves with a 3-11 record and finishing 15th place overall. Sailing for Coast Guard was Sam Ingham '11, Ian Oviatt '10, Jon Duffett '11, William Cotta '11, Matt Stroebel '12, Amanda Hamlet '12, Tanya Cuprak '11, and Kristen Holloway '12.

Georgetown University posted an 11-3 record in the gold fleet to win the 2010 Southern New England Team Race. Roger Williams finished 2nd with a record of 9-5, winning a tie-break over Yale who had the same record.

The Women's team faced some of the toughest competition of the season at the Brad Dellenbaugh Trophy hosted by Brown University. The sailors were treated to excellent racing conditions both days, with unseasonally high temperatures producing a strong sea-breeze on the Providence River. The team of Krysta Rohde '11 and Elise Maher '11 in A-Divison and Jenn Proctor '11 and Margaret Woodbridge '10 in B-Division finished 15th out of 18 teams with 329 points. Boston College narrowly passed the home team in the last set to win the regatta with 149 points. Brown finished 2nd with 154 points and St. Mary's finished 3rd with 168 points.

Next weekend Coast Guard will host the New London Invitational. Eighteen teams are signed up, including three teams from CGA. With the Bears making their final push towards New England Championships, everyone on the team will be at home working hard to improve for the upcoming weekends.
