WORCESTER, MASS.--(3/27/10) The men's crew raced Weslyan on Lake Quinsigamond in their season opener.

The Varsity first boat (Austin King, Joe Derenzo, Kris Kesting, Phil Constantino, Brian Bonomi, Steve Suggs, Tom Olson, Dan Swaim and Andrew Slater) raced a competitive race with a strong start but was beaten by six seconds by a Wesleyan crew that shows good early season speed.

In the Men's 2V race, the Bears were first off the line and held a half boat lead over Wesleyan through the first thousand meters, then proceeded to walk away and win with a boat length of open water. Crew members: Cox: William Rimmler, Stroke: Jacob Conrad, Erich Dix, George Greendyk, Sam Merritt, Geoffrey Pringle, Colin Schembri, Connor Stevens, Bow: Stephen Atwell.

The 3V was crewed by three CGA veterans, John Olbrys (stroke), Chris Bodner (seven) and Tyler Patrick (6); and five novices, Matt Engle (bow), Jake Naum (two), Dan Jones (three), Brendan Wilbraham (four), Art Konotopskiy (five) and coxswain Lydia Monks. For two of the rowers it was their first competition ever. The Bears came off the line at a stroke rate of 38 to gain a quick lead, before settling to a 32. They held off several challenges by Wesleyan to win the race by a length and a half.

Next the Bears take on the powerhouse Trinity as well as UConn in Coventry, Conn. on Saturday starting at 7:30.
