 Holli Bastinck had two hits and three RBI's in the game one win. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/28/10)--Sophomore Hayley Feindel allowed just two hits and an unearned run while striking out nine to lead Coast Guard, ranked 21st nationally and first in New England, to a 9-1 five inning win in the opener over Wellesley before the Blue snapped the Bears 20-game New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) unbeaten streak with an 8-2 win in game two behind the pitching of freshman Sarah Schwartzmeyer, who allowed just two hits and an earned run while striking out six to salvage the split.
The conference loss was the Bears first since April 19, 2008 at Smith. Coast Guard was 15-0-1 last season with Wellesley tying the Bears.
In the opener, Wellesley (10-4, 2-2) scored an unearned run in the top of the first before Coast Guard got two in the home half on a two-run homer by senior Courtney Wolf.
The Bears broke the game open in the third with four runs. Junior Amanda Frederick had an RBI single, freshman Holli Bastinck added a two-run single before senior Carin Sweeney followed with an RBI groundout for a 6-1 lead.
Frederick, Bastinck and Sweeney all had RBI single in the fifth to end the game due to the eight-run rule.
Freshman Lauren Goldfarb (5-2) allowed nine hits and seven earned runs to take the loss in game one.
In the nightcap, junior Brittany Bakacs had three hits and four RBI’s to back the pitching of Schwartzmyer.
Bakacs had an RBI single in the first as Wellesley plated a pair of unearned runs for a 2-0 lead.
The Blue added three more in the second with Bakacs delivering the key hit, a two-run double for a 5-0 lead.
Bakacs had an RBI single in the fourth and freshman Mara Blesoff drew a bases loaded walk for a 7-0 lead.
Goldfarb blasted a solo homer in the fifth for an 8-0 lead.
Coast Guard scored both of its runs in the fifth on a two-run single by sophomore Maddie Buchert.
Feindel (10-4) again went the distance in game two and allowed seven hits and eight runs, just three earned, while walking three and striking out ten including the 500th of her career. She now has 504 career strikeouts.
Sophomore Jessie Haladyna had a pair of hits and scored three runs for Wellesley in the game two win.
