Softball - Feindel Throws No-Hitter as Bears Sweep
Hayley Feindel fired a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts in the opener.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/20/10)--Sophomore Hayley Feindel fired a no-hitter in the opener and senior Carin Sweeney was 3 for 3 with two RBI’s in game two as Coast Guard, ranked 19th nationally, swept Castleton State 6-0 and 6-1 in the home opener, a non-conference doubleheader.
Feindel faced just two batters over the minimum in the opener as a runner reached on an error and she walked a batter while striking out 13 to record her second career no-hitter.
Coast Guard erupted for five runs in the fifth to break a scoreless tie. Junior Becky Miller had a two-run single to break the scoreless tie while junior Amanda Frederick added an RBI double and freshmen Holli Bastinck and Megan Cook each had RBI singles in the inning.
Miller added an RBI single in the sixth and had three hits and three RBI’s in game one while Bastinck and junior Anna Funk each added two hits in the opener.
Coast Guard (7-3) wasted no time taking the lead in game two, as the Bears scored three in the bottom of the first as Frederick delivered an RBI single and Sweeney added a two-run single for the 3-0 lead.
Castleton State (0-5) got its only run of the day on a solo homer by sophomore Shannon Jipner in the fourth.
Sophomore Maddie Buchert added some insurance, a two-run homer in the sixth, as the Bears took a 6-1 lead.
Feindel worked four inning and allowed one run on three hits while striking out seven to pickup the win while freshman Catherine Walker worked the final three innings, allowing a pair of hits, to earn the save.
