Hayley Feindel pitched two-hitter with 14 strikeouts in the opener. KISSIMMEE, FLA.--(3/7/10)--Sophomore Hayley Feindel fired a two-hit shutout while striking out 14 and not walking a batter as Coast Guard, ranked 11th nationally, opened the season with a 2-0 win over Misericordia before losing to Albion 3-2 at the Rebel Games.
Feindel, who led all of Division III with 34 wins last season, was brilliant in the opener and senior Carin Sweeney gave the Bears all the offense they would need, a two-run single in the third.
In the second game of the day, Coast Guard trailed 3-0 and was being no hit heading to the bottom of the seventh before junior catcher Amanda Frederick doubled for the Bears first hit. Senior Courtney Wolf blasted a two-run homer to pull the Bears to within 3-2.
Freshman Holli Bastinck reached on an error, Sweeney singled and following a sacrifice bunt by junior Becky Miller, sophomore Jamie Kim walked to load the bases with two outs. Sophomore Maddie Buchert flied out deep to right field, on a 3-2 pitch, as the rally fell short.
Feindel also allowed just two hits in game two, struck out nine and walked three. |
