Men's Swimming - Bears Finish 2nd at NEWMAC Championships
Mike Carman placed second in the 200 breaststroke to earn All-conference honors.
NORTON, MASS.--(2/28/10)--During the third and final day, Coast Guard earned All-conference honors with second place finishes in four events, all posting NCAA “B” cut times, as the Bears finished second for the second straight season at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships at Wheaton College.
MIT won the championship for the second straight season as the Engineers finished with 1,027 points while the Bears totaled 947.5 points for the three-day championship. Coast Guard had won the NEWMAC Championship for three straight seasons from 2006-2008 before MIT won the crown last year.
The top two finishers in each event earn All-conference honors.
Freshman Nick Poehler placed second in the 1,650 freestyle with an NCAA “B” cut time of 16:10.29 while junior Alex Brown placed fourth (16:37.94).
Junior Mike Carman took second in the 200 breaststroke with a “B” cut time of 2:06.60.
Freshman Kevin Smith placed second in the 200 butterfly by posting a “B” cut time of 1:54.06.
The Bears 400 freestyle relay of sophomore Johnson Knox, junior Eric Schwartz, sophomore Dan Beshoar and sophomore Brian McGuiness placed second with an NCAA “B” cut time of 3:06.09.
Senior Timmy Berry posted an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:53.34 and placed third in the 200 backstroke. Sophomore Johnson Knox placed third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.57.
