Men's Swimming - Bears in 2nd at NEWMAC Championships After Day One
Nick Poehler led the charge in the 500 freestyle with a second place finish.
NORTON, MASS.--(2/26/10)--Freshman Nick Poehler placed second in the 500 freestyle as Coast Guard took seven of the top ten spots in the event as the Bears are in 2nd place after the first day of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Wheaton College.
Defending champion MIT leads after Day One with 303 points, 50 points ahead of the Bears who have 253 points.
Poehler took second in the 500 freestyle with an NCAA “B” cut time of 4:38.08 to earn All-conference honors. Junior Alex Brown was third (4:41.86) while freshman Kevin Smit placed fourth (4:44.32) for the Bears. Freshman Tanner Armstrong (4:47.77) was sixth and sophomore Nick Cosenza placed eighth (4:51.15). Sophomore Bryan Andrews won the B Final to place ninth (4:45.72) while junior Theodore Borny placed 10th (4:45.87) as he placed second in the B Final.
The 200 freestyle relay team of sophomore Brian McGuiness, sophomore Johnson Knox, junior Brian Bonomi and sophomore Dan Beshoar took second with a time an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:24.07 in the opening event of the championship to earn All-conference honors.
The 400 medley relay team of senior Timmy Berry, sophomore Matt Odom, junior Dan Alley and Knox had the best time in the morning heat, but was disqualified in the finals, thus earning no points.
Knox also took third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.19.
The top two finishers in each event earn All-conference honors.
All NCAA “B” cut times will be considered for a slot at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships which begin on March 17th at the University of Minnesota.
