WORCESTER, MASS.--(2/24/10)--Third-seeded WPI jumped out to an 18-2 lead, but had to hold off sixth-seeded Coast Guard 76-71 in the quarterfinals of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament.

The Engineers used an 8-1 run to take a 68-55 lead with 5:05 left, but Coast Guard responded, with nine straight to cut the deficit to 68-64 with 2:22 left following a steal by senior Stefan Lewis and basket by freshman Greg Marshall.

Junior Kyle Nadeau knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:11 left before Marshall sank a pair of free throws and then knocked down a 3-pointer to make the score 71-69 with 52.1 seconds left.

Junior Jeffrey Robinson made a pair of free throws with 11.9 seconds left to make it a 73-69 before senior Eric Hudson’s basket made it 73-71 with six seconds left.

Sophomore David Brown hit three of four foul shots to ice the game for WPI.

WPI (19-6) advances to the semifinals on Saturday at MIT while Coast Guard finishes the season with a record of 7-16.

Marshall led all scorers with a career-high 26 points on 10 of 15 shooting while Hudson had 14 points, a team-high six rebounds and a career-high 10 assists. Senior Stefan Lewis added 11 points for the Bears.

Nadeau led four WPI players in double figures with 16 points.

Earlier in the second half, WPI scored eight straight turning a 52-48 lead with 10:26 left into a 60-48 advantage with 8:15 left. Coast Guard responded with six straight to pull to within 60-54 following a 3-pointer by freshman Greg Marshall with 7:11 left.

In the first half, Nadeau knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers in the opening minutes as the Engineers took an 8-0 lead just 1:33 into the game. Marshall got the Bears on the board before WPI ran off ten straight for the 18-2 lead with 15:33 left in the first half.

Coast Guard managed to cut the deficit to just eight at 20-12 with 12:41 left by scoring seven straight, the final four by Hudson, but WPI responded with seven straight to push the lead to 27-12 with 11:16 left in the half

The Bears got back in the game in the final three minutes of the half, making the final three field goals of the half, all 3-pointers, using a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 42-36 at halftime. Hudson, junior Brett Huntley and freshman Jimmy Knudsen all knocked down treys in the run for the Bears.

Both teams were hot in the first half as WPI shot 57.1 percent from the floor (16-28) while hitting four of nine from 3-point range.

Coast Guard shot 56 percent (14-25) in the opening half while hitting seven of 13 from behind the arc.

Hudson, led the Bears with 11 first half points, while Marshall was four for four from the floor and had 10 points at the break.

Sophomore Fernando Perez led WPI with 12 first half points.

WPI dominated the boards in the first half. The Engineers grabbed 14 of the first 15 rebounds in the game and outrebounded the Bears 19-5 in the opening half.

The Engineers shot just 26.1 percent in the second half (6-23), but they shot 43.1 percent (22-51) in the game, hitting eight of 18 from 3-point range.

Coast Guard shot 46.4 percent from the floor (26-56) while hitting 10 of 24 from 3-point range.
