 Kim Shadwick has been outstanding during the first two days of the NEWMAC Championships WELLESLEY, MASS.--(2/20/10)--Junior Kim Shadwick has had a great first two days at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships hosted by Wellesley College.
She has set a pair of NEWMAC Championship and school records and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in winning both the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle and took second place in a pair of relay events as Coast Guard is in fourth place with 304 points after the second day of competition.
She jumped to an early lead in the 500 freestyle and pulled away to take the crown for the second straight season with a time of 4:58.50 on Friday. She broke her own NEWMAC Championship and school record of 5:00.10 set last season.
On Saturday, she won her second event of the Championships by capturing the 200 freestyle for the third straight season. She again broke her own NEWMAC Championship and school record of 1:53.07 by posting a time of 1:51.66. Sophomore Heidi Gayman placed third in the event with a time of 1:54.25, which is an NCAA “B” cut time and could send her to the NCAA Division III Championships at the University of Minnesota beginning on March 17th.
Gayman also placed third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24:65.
The Bears 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Madeline Ede, Gayman, junior Emily Zalewski and Shadwick placed second with a time of 1:39.14 while the 400 yard medley relay team of sophomore Sam Sworden, senior Amy Olson, Shadwick and Gayman placed second with a school-record time and NCAA “B” cut time of 3:59.41.
Olson also took second place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.04.
Shadwick was a three-event champion last season, as she also won the 1,650 freestyle, an event she will look to repeat in tomorrow in the third and final day of the championship.
