NEW LONDON, CONN.--(2/17/10)--Senior Melissa Martinelli led all scorers with 18 points while freshman Karli Collins had a career-high 14 points as Coast Guard snapped an 11-game conference losing streak on Senior Night with a 54-43 win over Mount Holyoke in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Coast Guard (7-16, 4-13), outscored Mount Holyoke 34-15 in the second half to overcome an eight-point halftime deficit. The Bears can clinch the eighth and final NEWMAC tournament playoff spot with a win at Clark on Saturday or an MIT loss to Smith.

Mount Holyoke (8-16, 6-11) used a 12-4 run over the final 8:36 of the first half turning a 16-16 tie into a 28-20 halftime lead.

The Bears used a 18-5 second half run holding the Lyons to just one field in that span turning a 34-26 deficit with 13:49 left into a 44-39 edge with 5:46 left.

Coast Guard took the lead for good, 40-39 on a 3-pointer by senior Leslie Hunt with 6:58 left.

The Bears led 44-41 with 5:25 left and outscored Mount Holyoke 10-2 the rest of the way.

Sophomore Christine Chancy led Mount Holyoke with 11 points on five of six shooting and four assists while senior Kate Shafir added 10 points. Chancy, senior Erin Cain and senior Jess Olson had five rebounds each to lead the way.

Senior Carin Sweeney led the Bears with nine rebounds while Martinelli added eight boards.

The Lyons shot 36.7 percent from the field (81-49) and hit just one of 12 from 3-point range.

Coast Guard, which won back-to-back games for the first time this season, was 19 of 50 from the floor (38 percent), shooting 50 percent in the second half. The Bears made two of eight from 3-point range.
